EAST MELBOURNE ROOF GARDEN
Retrofit Roof Garden _ East Melbourne VIC. Australia _ Completed 2024
East Melbourne Roof Garden fuses nature, functionality, and breathtaking views to create a seamless urban oasis.
Situated atop a 19-storey residential building on the fringe of Melbourne’s CBD, the design capitalises on its elevated position to offer unparalleled panoramic views of Melbourne’s dynamic skyline, including its world-renowned sports precinct, the Yarra River and Birrarung Mar to the south, and the CBD and Treasury Gardens to the north. The project transforms a previously underutilised, wind-exposed deck into a vibrant, multifunctional outdoor sanctuary that benefits both its residents below and the wider urban environment.
The East Melbourne Roof Garden is a dynamic and versatile urban landscape that comprises a series of distinct spatial zones that are interconnected by a meandering ‘green corridor’ defined by lush planting of varying scales and density. Each spatial zone is designed to cater to specific outdoor activities, with each characterised by unique views and habitats.
A newly added kitchen, equipped with modern conveniences, seamlessly flows into an outdoor BBQ and bar area, offering some of the most spectacular views Melbourne has to offer. Enhanced by a new powder room and storage facilities – occupying the former pool services enclosure - the rooftop is now entirely self-sufficient.
A large decorative dining table with built-in seating comfortably accommodates groups for breakfasts, dinners, and everything in between.
A tranquil spot for reading or enjoying the bustle of the city from a peaceful vantage point is provided; the distant sounds of passing trains, footy sirens or raucous cheering from Melbourne Park add to the experience of the space.
Sun shading structures protect each of the exterior spaces from hot summer sun; they support outdoor heating panels that ensure that the roof garden is comfortable in Melbourne’s chilly winter evenings.
Large planters, spilling over with greenery, create useful wind breaks; the planting, strategically placed at eye level when seated, extends the natural landscape of Birrarung Marr onto the rooftop, seamlessly integrating the garden with its surroundings. Planting is an eclectic combination of hardy, low-maintenance species that thrive in Melbourne's climate with minimal maintenance. Plants are selected not only for their beauty but also for their ability to create an immersive experience that draws the eye from the roof garden into the expansive views of Birrarung Marr and the city beyond.
East Melbourne Roof Garden exemplifies our commitment to creating roof gardens that integrate seamlessly with their urban context, offering an experience that is both functional and sustainable. By transforming an disused deck into a spatially enriching and ecologically responsive environment, this roof garden not only improves the quality of life for its residents but also contributes positively to the city’s broader ecological footprint. Through thoughtful, sustainable design, we aim to elevate and embellish urban living, proving that even the highest and most exposed rooftops can become vibrant, liveable spaces.
