QVWC ROOFTOP
Green Roof & Function Space_Queen Victoria Womens Centre CBD VIC. Australia_ Design Completed 2011
The QVWC Green Roof will provide a green oasis within the city, reinvigorating and revitalizing the rooftop of this landmark building housing the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre on Lonsdale Street, Melbourne.
Upgraded function spaces within the new roof garden are conceived of as a series of conversation pits nestled amongst the landscape, offering multiple configurations for various sized groups. These conversation pits nurture collaboration with likeminded women’s organisations and other groups to make a bigger impact, and will embody sustainable design principles that benefit both the building below and the city at large.
Drawing on the geometries of the existing building, the arrangement, height and density of landscaping is manipulated to provide protection and privacy whilst also framing spectacular views of the State Library to the north and city skyline to the south, reinforcing the QVWC as a vibrant place known, valued and used by women to shape the world they want for themselves and for women of the future.
